On 13 December 2025, while travelling back to Islamabad via the motorway (M-2), I encountered a disconcerting sight. As I crossed the Chakri interchange, I was surprised to see multiple motorcycles on the motorway. To my knowledge, motorcycles are not permitted on motorways. Yet, here they were, and these were heavy bikes at that.
As I pondered how these motorcycles ended up there, one of them attempted to overtake a truck by switching lanes, causing an unexpected hazard for me and other motorists. This incident raises serious questions about the presence of motorcycles on motorways.
If the motorway authorities are considering allowing motorcycles, I believe it would pose a significant safety risk. While heavy motorcycles themselves are challenging enough to manage on motorways, permitting lighter bikes would only increase the risk of accidents and congestion. Moreover, it would lead to a discriminatory scenario where only certain types of motorcycles are allowed, which is neither fair nor safe.
I have learned that there may be specific regulations for heavy motorcycles, but the broader implication remains that allowing any motorcycles can compromise road safety. It is crucial for the authorities to prioritise public safety over convenience and ensure that motorways remain safe for all commuters. I urge motorway authorities to reconsider any plans to allow motorcycles on the motorway and to keep the safety of all road users as the top priority.
