Climate change: why films matter

Climate change: why films matter

Climate change is no longer an abstract concept confined to scientific reports. It is an unfolding crisis that is altering weather patterns, reshaping landscapes and disrupting human lives. Nowhere is this more visible than in the high mountain regions of Central and South Asia.

These mountains are the “water towers” of Asia, feeding the rivers that sustain nearly a third of the world’s population living downstream. When the glaciers melt, the impact is felt far beyond the remote valleys where avalanches, floods and landslides destroy homes and livelihoods. The future survival of snow leopards, Himalayan brown bears and other wildlife species is also threatened, as habitats shrink and food sources vanish.

This is why films in the Voices from the Roof of the World series are so important. Directed by local filmmakers from the countries most affected by climate disasters in high mountain regions, their documentaries focus on stories ignored by the international media. They show how the most vulnerable people are now forced to overcome extraordinary challenges.

The issue is not just about melting ice or shifting weather patterns in distant mountain communities. It is about the cascading effects of catastrophic climate change. The impact is felt by tens of millions of people dealing with food insecurity or the health risks posed by rising temperatures. Urban areas, too, are becoming increasingly vulnerable to heatwaves and pollution, straining infrastructure and forcing migrants from rural areas into precarious living conditions.

While developed nations often have the resources to respond to climate disasters, many mountain communities in Asia must bear the costs alone.
By documenting these issues, the VRW series provides more than a record of loss. It offers a space for reflection and learning: from the resilience of those enduring the crisis, to the scientists who try to explain it.
The signs of the accelerating climate emergency are everywhere: from the highest peaks to the sweltering plains below. Voices from the Roof of the World ensures that these warnings are neither ignored nor forgotten.
