In the name of security

Letter December 15, 2025
In the name of security

There is a growing trend of putting up more barriers, guards and checkpoints in our cities. What was meant to make people feel safer now gives the impression that we are living inside a controlled zone. Too much security may offer comfort, but it also takes away the openness that a society needs to breathe.

Before tightening security further, we should reflect on a simple point: have we ever taught civic sense? Most of us never received basic guidance at home about public behaviour. Our schools seldom prioritise manners, and our leaders rarely lead by example. When a society grows up without civic training, mistrust becomes routine and more security becomes the only response.

Real safety comes from responsible citizens, not just fences and guards.
