The deteriorating state of public transport in Sukkur town of Sindh has become a daily ordeal for commuters who depend entirely on buses and vans to reach their workplaces and schools. Vehicles are overcrowded, poorly maintained and often unsafe, leaving passengers with no choice but to travel in uncomfortable and hazardous conditions.
Various transport projects were launched in the past, but none has been implemented with consistency, failing to work in the long term. Moreover, route permits are misused, fares fluctuate without oversight, and old and unfit vehicles continue to operate unchecked. Women, elderly citizens and students remain the most vulnerable in this collapsing system.
The absence of a reliable transport network has wider consequences: increased road congestion, higher fuel consumption and growing frustration among citizens forced to endure long delays and unsafe travel daily. A functioning society cannot exist without a functional transport system.
Authorities must take immediate steps to introduce modern buses, enforce strict fitness checks and regulate routes and fares. Until public transport becomes safe, accessible and dependable, the city’s mobility crisis will only deepen.
