Overflowing gutters

Letter December 04, 2025
Overflowing gutters

Continuous overflow of sewage water is a growing civic problem in much of Karachi. What was once an occasional inconvenience has now turned into a daily struggle, affecting health, mobility and basic living conditions.

In many parts of the city, especially low-lying residential areas and busy commercial streets, sewage water stays collected for long periods. The unbearable smell, mosquito infestation and overall unhygienic environment have made it extremely difficult for people to even step outside their homes. Children are particularly at risk, as they are more exposed to skin infections, stomach illnesses and other diseases caused by this polluted water.

Broken pipelines, clogged drains and poor maintenance continue to worsen the situation. During the rainy season, the problem becomes even more severe as sewage water mixes with rainwater, spreading across roads and causing traffic jams along with serious health hazards.

I request KMC, KWSC and other relevant departments to take urgent action. Repairing damaged lines, improving drainage systems and ensuring regular monitoring are essential steps that cannot be delayed anymore. The people of Karachi deserve clean surroundings and a safe environment. A functioning sewage system is not a luxury; it is a basic necessity for every citizen.
