Safer public transport

Letter October 27, 2025
Safer public transport

The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system was once seen as a symbol of modern progress in Peshawar. It was meant to make daily travel easier and safer for everyone. But that promise has faded. Weak management and poor security have made commuting stressful. Many women no longer feel safe while travelling because incidents of harassment have become common, and there are not enough security staff to respond in a timely manner.

The city administration can take simple steps to improve the situation. CCTV cameras at all stations must work, and there should be clear emergency contact points that passengers can use. Security guards need to be present throughout the day, especially during rush hours. Increasing bus frequency during peak times will also help prevent overcrowding.

Setting up designated spaces for women can make travelling more comfortable and secure. Transport officials should also study the movement of people in and around the stations to identify unsafe spots and make small design changes that improve overall safety.

Passengers should be part of the solution too. Their complaints and suggestions can highlight issues that planners might overlook. Civil society and commuter representatives can help monitor service quality and make sure improvements actually happen.

If the BRT is managed with care and accountability, it can once again become a reliable and safe transport system. Peshawar deserves a public service that helps people travel with confidence and dignity.
