Cyberbullying virus

Letter October 14, 2025
Cyberbullying virus

KARACHI:

Cyberbullying and online harassment are among the white-collar crimes that not only instil fear in individuals but also harm society as a whole. These acts involve intimidating or blackmailing someone through online platforms. Cyberbullying and online harassment are recognised offences under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016.

A study conducted by UN Women shows a rapid increase in cases of online harassment and cyberbullying, many of which have tragically led to suicides. Although FIA offers an online platform where victims can file complaints and seek redress, the system remains underutilised. This is primarily because many people are unaware of the redressal procedure, and Pakistan’s justice system is so sluggish that the resolution of even a single case can take years if not months. Consequently, the rate of these crimes continues to rise.

Cyberbullying and online harassment are among the biggest social problems today. They affect not only women but also men and, at times, entire communities. In a nutshell, cyberbullying and online harassment are like a virus spreading through our society — one that must be stopped.
