Lack of career counselling

Letter October 06, 2025
Lack of career counselling

Career counselling might sound like a fancy term but in reality it is extremely important. It provides individuals with a roadmap to plan and pursue their careers effectively. Unfortunately, in our society, this concept is often neglected. Many students have little idea about their career paths and rely solely on advice from family members or teachers. Such advice often lacks proper direction and fails to consider the student’s own aspirations, leading to confusion and indecision.

Lack of career counselling for students is one of the core issues that needs urgent attention. In large urban centres like Lahore, Karachi, Multan and Islamabad, various platforms do offer counselling services, but in rural areas and smaller towns, students often struggle to find guidance. For example, a student who completes intermediate studies in pre-medical may end up pursuing a BBA or an unrelated bachelor’s degree simply to secure a job. This mismatch between education and career goals often leads to delayed decision-making on the professional path one should take.

Hence, effective career counselling must be made accessible to all students so that they can make informed decisions about their future, rather than settling for mismatched career paths.
