Pakistani media

Letter September 25, 2025
Pakistani media

Pakistani dramas have long held a cherished place in our homes, captivating audiences with their emotional depth and cultural resonance. Yet, despite their popularity, many of these stories continue to fall short of their potential. Time and again, we see women portrayed as helpless victims, minorities rendered invisible and pressing societal issues brushed aside in favour of recycled tropes.

This matters because the media doesn’t just entertain, it educates too. It shapes perceptions, influences values and reflects the soul of a nation. When our screens consistently depict women as submissive, or ignore the lived realities of marginalised communities, we risk reinforcing harmful stereotypes and silencing vital voices.

It’s time for a shift. Our dramas must evolve to showcase strong, complex women who lead, resist and inspire. They must embrace the rich diversity of Pakistan, its ethnicities, religions and social classes and confront the real challenges we face: mental health, class disparity and more.

Let’s move beyond the formulaic tales of betrayal and suffering. Let’s tell stories that matter stories that challenge, uplift and reflect the true spirit of our society. Our screens should mirror our world, not distort it.
