Education and Balochistan

Education and Balochistan

KARACHI:

The state of basic education in Balochistan is dire, with many children in remote areas lacking access to proper schools. The province has the lowest literacy rate in Pakistan, with only 42% of the population able to read and write. The situation is particularly challenging for girls, who face cultural and safety concerns that hinder their ability to pursue education.

Key challenges in Balochistan’s education system include the lack of infrastructure, untrained teachers, poor learning materials and safety concerns. Many schools lack proper buildings, with some existing only on paper. Over 3,000 schools have no proper roofs and 75% of schools operate with only one classroom. The province also suffers from a shortage of qualified teachers, with many schools having only one teacher. Additionally, 15,000 teachers are “ghost teachers” existing only on paper. Schools often lack basic facilities like science rooms, laboratories and clean water.

The consequences of these challenges are severe. Around 70% of children in Balochistan drop out after completing primary education, with girls being disproportionately affected. The literacy rate in Balochistan is around 42%, with female literacy rates being significantly lower, especially in rural areas where it can be below 10%. The lack of education in Balochistan contributes to poverty, unemployment and social instability.

To address these challenges, the government needs to invest more in school infrastructure, staff training and learning materials. Special attention should be given to promoting girls’ education, including increasing the number of female teachers and ensuring safe learning environments. Efforts should also be made to eliminate “ghost schools” and “ghost teachers” and ensure that education funds are utilised effectively. By taking these steps, we can work towards improving the state of education in Balochistan and promoting a more equitable and stable society.
