KARACHI:
Despite being the largest city and financial backbone of Pakistan, Karachi is constantly plagued by prolonged and unscheduled power outages. Citizens in various areas are facing 10 to 12 hours of load-shedding. This not only affects domestic life but also paralyses businesses, educational institutions and healthcare services.
The situation is even more alarming in low-income and densely populated areas, where power cuts are longer and more frequent. Small business owners, shopkeepers and daily wage workers are among the hardest hit. On the other hand, billing issues, overcharging and lack of maintenance add further frustration to the lives of citizens.
It is unfortunate that despite high electricity tariffs and years of promises, no permanent solution has been implemented. Power generation and distribution systems are outdated and there seems to be little accountability from the concerned authorities.
There is need to take immediate steps to modernise the power infrastructure, ensure fair distribution and provide some relief to the citizens.
