Eradicate crime, not criminals

Letter September 19, 2025
Eradicate crime, not criminals

For decades, District Ghotki — especially the Katcha area — has been trapped in a cycle of crime and violence. Police encounters are common, many alleged criminals have been killed, and brave officers have embraced martyrdom. Yet, peace remains an unachieved challenge.

Despite countless lives lost, the crime rate hasn’t changed. Fear still rules Katcha. It’s time we asked why. The truth is, we’ve been addressing crime the wrong way — by focusing on individuals instead of root causes.
The sitting District Police Officer has taken a new approach. With the help of volunteers, he has opened a school in Katcha, believing that real peace can only come through education. He rightly says: “Peace in Katcha cannot be achieved by killing people; it can only be restored through education.”

This initiative targets the real causes of crime — poverty, illiteracy and lack of opportunity. For decades, the state has ignored this region. Without schools, jobs or basic facilities, many youths have seen no path other than crime.
Education is not a quick fix, but it’s the only sustainable solution. The Sindh government must support this effort — by building schools, improving infrastructure and creating jobs. Peace will only come when people are given something to live for. Let’s stop fighting people. Let’s start fighting the reasons behind the violence. It’s time to invest in education — not more bloodshed.
