Shikarpur, once known as the Paris of Sindh for its rich culture and learning tradition, is today facing a heartbreaking crisis in its schools. A visit to several government schools in the district reveals the grim reality: no proper staff, no furniture, no cleanliness, and no motivation for students to attend.
The shortage of teachers and peons has left classrooms unattended and schools in disorder. Children wander aimlessly because there are no instructors to guide them, and no support staff to maintain discipline. Adding to the misery is the absence of furniture. In many schools, students sit on broken benches or directly on the floor, enduring discomfort for hours. Such conditions hardly create an atmosphere of learning. Perhaps the most alarming issue is lack of cleanliness.
With little or no cleaning staff, classrooms remain dusty, washrooms unusable, and playgrounds littered. This unhygienic environment not only discourages children but also puts their health at risk.
The result is clear: mass absenteeism of students. Parents, already worried about their children’s safety and future, prefer to keep them at home rather than send them to such neglected institutions.
Education is the backbone of any society. If the schools of Shikarpur are left in this condition, the district will continue to sink deeper into illiteracy and backwardness. The authorities must wake up and take immediate measures: appoint staff, provide furniture and ensure regular cleanliness before an entire generation is lost to negligence.
