The obsession with reels is becoming a big issue in Pakistan. Reels are short videos watched on apps like TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, etc. At first, they seemed funny and entertaining, making us laugh and giving information about fashion, cooking, singing, and more. However, the ongoing trend has created a serious problem in our society, especially among the youth.
Young people spend hours watching reels or following these trends instead of focusing on their studies or careers. Reports suggest that almost 40% of the youths use TikTok, 41% Instagram and 30% YouTube, with most of their time spent scrolling through reels. This shows how strongly these videos capture their attention.
As a result, students waste valuable time that could be used for reading, studying or learning new skills. Reels are shaping the daily lives and mindsets of young people in a negative way, distracting them from building their future.
Reels are no doubt a powerful source of entertainment, but their overuse is harmful. The issue must be solved positively by encouraging the youth to balance entertainment with education, career building and productive activities. Parents, teachers, and even young people themselves must realise that time is precious, and it should be invested wisely.
