Traveling by bus to college often feels like an unwanted struggle. The women’s section is too small, and men often occupy those seats without hesitation. On one occasion, women had to stand the entire way in a packed bus while being pushed from all sides with no sense of safety or respect. Such journeys leave women tired long before they reach their actual destination. Many of my classmates face similar challenges.
Overcrowding, harassment and constant staring. These problems are so common that some girls simply stop using public transport.
If the authorities truly wish to encourage women to move freely, then reforms are needed. The government can introduce women-only buses, enforce stricter checks on reserved seating and enact safer waiting areas. Public transport should boost women’s confidence, not invoke fear.
