Begging mafia

Begging mafia

Each day, I see several beggars on roads, mostly outside traffic signals. They’re pervasive not only in Turbat but in several parts of Balochistan like Quetta, Khuzdar and Chaghi. What most people do not realise is that these beggars are often controlled by mafias instead of being needy individuals.

These mafias particularly exploit children, poor people and disabled people. Many children involved in begging are either kidnapped or deliberately injured and maimed so they appear disabled. A large number of beggars in Balochistan are even trafficked from other countries.

Not only does this practice exploit people’s hard-earned money but it also creates an environment which encourages criminal activities. Strict action should be taken by the police to identify and arrest these mafia leaders. Strong laws, better social welfare and public awareness is desperately needed to break this cruel cycle.
