Neglected Namal Valley

Letter August 29, 2025
Neglected Namal Valley

Located 40 kilometers from Mianwali city, Namal Valley is a gem of natural beauty, boasting breathtaking attractions like Namal Lake, Namal Dam, picturesque valleys, rain streams, diverse trees and a vibrant bird population. The valley’s warm-hearted people add to its charm, making it a haven for tourists and locals alike.

However, this idyllic paradise is facing an existential crisis. Human neglect and greed have taken a devastating toll on Namal Lake, once the crown jewel of the valley. The construction of small dams and embankments along the rain streams has disrupted the natural flow of water, while the local community’s occupation of these streams for agriculture has further exacerbated the problem.

The consequences are stark. For two years, Namal Lake has remained dry, and the dam stands as a testament to neglect. Siltation has choked the lake, while excessive groundwater extraction for non-essential purposes has depleted the water table, distressing the local community. The valley’s ecosystem has been served a severe blow, with thousands of trees felled and the bird population vanishing, taking with it the natural beauty and revenue generated from fishing.

Despite repeated warnings from community members, Namal Valley remains in a state of limbo, awaiting government intervention. It’s imperative that authorities take immediate action to revive this treasured valley. This can be achieved by: developing the area as a tourist hub to promote sustainable livelihoods; implementing reforestation efforts to prevent further deforestation; removing barriers that block the natural flow of water to Namal Lake; and renovating Namal Dam to restore its former glory.

The fate of Namal Valley hangs in the balance. Will the government step in to save this natural wonder, or will it succumb to neglect and human apathy?
