Protect journalists

Letter August 25, 2025
Protect journalists

As journalists continue to risk their lives to report from the front lines of civil unrest, violence and authoritarian regimes, it’s imperative that we acknowledge the grave dangers they face. The violence, intimidation and harassment they encounter not only jeopardise their safety but also their very lives. The alarming number of journalists who have been murdered, abducted or imprisoned while performing their duties is a stark reminder of the risks they take to tell the stories that need to be told.

Governments, organisations and international agencies must come together to ensure the safety and protection of journalists. Those who assault or harass journalists must be held accountable for their actions. By doing so, we can promote a free and independent press, which is the backbone of a robust democracy. Protecting journalists is not just a moral obligation; it’s also essential for the health of our democracy.

The time for action is now. We must recognise the critical role journalists play in our society and take concrete steps to protect them. By doing so, we can ensure that the stories that need to be told are told, and that our democracy remains strong and vibrant.
