Caged Ghotki

KARACHI:

Despite being one of the smallest districts of Sindh, Ghotki is strikingly the second-highest tax-paying district in Pakistan. Known as ‘Golden Sparrow’ for its economic potential, it is home to major industries such as FFC, OGDCL, five sugar mills and a wealth of natural resources. Yet, despite this prosperity, Ghotki remains at the mercy of feudal landlords. These elites exercise dominance over the marginalised masses keeping them politically and socially suppressed.

The district suffers from serious challenges. There is no university to serve its youth, leaving higher education out of reach. Security conditions are fragile, as many landlords shield and empower criminals, particularly dacoits, using their political influence to safeguard illicit activities. The flow of illegal weapons into the katcha areas is not a mystery — it is facilitated by these same feudal networks. Ghotki’s citizens deserve education, safety and progress, so as not to remain trapped in the shadow of oppression.
