Escalating water crisis

KARACHI:

The water crisis in Karachi is worsening. Once celebrated as a modern metropolis, Karachi now finds many of its residents, particularly in New Karachi, Landhi, Korangi, Baldia Town and Orangi Town, enduring extreme hardship due to prolonged water scarcity. Entire neighborhoods have gone without piped water for weeks, forcing families to depend on overpriced water tankers or unsafe underground sources — luxuries beyond the reach of lower- and middle-income groups.

This acute shortage has severely undermined domestic life. In countless homes, mornings begin without water for basic hygiene or breakfast preparation. Children are often compelled to attend school without washing up, while many students and office workers leave home without eating, affecting their concentration, productivity and overall well-being. The lack of clean water has also triggered a troubling rise in cholera, diarrhea, hepatitis A and E, typhoid and gastroenteritis, further burdening families already struggling with rising inflation and high medical expenses.

It is imperative for the authorities to take immediate, effective and sustainable measures to restore an uninterrupted and safe water supply to all citizens. Access to clean water is not a privilege, but a fundamental right — one whose absence is stripping Karachi’s residents of dignity, health and hope.
