There is an alarming rise in road accidents claiming innocent lives, especially of children. The recent incident in Karachi’s Baldia Town, where eight-year-old Eemaan lost her life when a speeding truck rammed into her family’s motorcycle, is heartbreaking. Similar accidents took three more lives in different parts of the city on the same day.
These incidents reveal a serious lack of road safety, law enforcement and awareness. Reckless driving, over-speeding and failure to follow traffic rules have turned our roads into danger zones. Children, being the most vulnerable, pay the highest price for this negligence. Unfortunately, truck and heavy vehicle drivers often escape without being caught, which further encourages careless behaviour.
It is time the authorities strictly enforce traffic laws, install speed-monitoring cameras and ensure that heavy vehicles are restricted in residential and high-risk areas during peak hours. Public awareness campaigns about road safety, especially targeting drivers, are equally important. The government, traffic police and civil society must take immediate action so that tragedies like Eemaan’s death do not happen again.
