Overbilled electricity

Overbilled electricity

As a working-class citizen, I’ve learned to survive inflation, fuel hikes and economic instability. But electricity bills are something else entirely. They’ve become a source of terror. Now we know why. According to a recent report by the Auditor General of Pakistan, distribution companies have been charging excessive load factors beyond legal limits, resulting in Rs22,175 million overbilled to consumers. How many of us have paid for units we never used?

What’s worse is that there is no transparent system. No proper verification of units. Bills arrive without clear meter readings or logic. And when we question them, we’re treated as if we are the ones who have committed this inhumane act.

The government has yet to take real action. Even the audit report admits that record verification was ignored by management. If even the Auditor General gets no answers, what chance do I have at a complaint centre? This is not a minor error, it’s a matter of deep betrayal. We need justice, not apologies. And we need it now.
