We are living in an era where everyone can effortlessly access guns. Admittedly, guns are important tools for self-defence in a society where crime is rampant, but who regulates their use for self-defence and not crime? Nowadays even minors are in possession of guns despite the law prohibiting access to anyone under 18.
Moreover, the law further requires people to have licenses and proper training for possession of guns. You must also have a clear background record. But in our country, authorities fail to adequately vet owners and licenses are checked offhandedly.
Easier access to guns in a society leads to an increase in crime. This is clearly noticeable in our society as mass shootings are quite common, and guns are easily pulled out during minor family disputes and transgressions. Not only that but firing during celebrations is a reprehensible norm which is very commonly observed during weddings, 14 August celebrations and even religious celebrations. Every year, 14 August celebrations result in a number of casualties owing to careless aerial firing.
A lot of innocent lives are lost due to unrestricted access to these tools that are meant to be used with exceeding caution. A tool with the power to take away someone’s life must never be treated as a casual accessory. But unfortunately, the misuse of guns remains blatantly ignored despite its far-reaching consequences.
The government needs to take practical steps to ensure that gun possession is not allowed on a whim, or through social connections. Background records must be thoroughly checked and a rigid system of approval must be set in place.
