Rural areas in the province of Sindh are in the grip of a surging drug crisis. Abysmally low conviction rate of culprits in such cases, poverty, unemployment, easy supply, availability of prohibited items and a few other factors proliferate drugs and other banned items in every city and village in the province. Narcotic substances are also seeping into my village Umar Bhayo-Garello in Larkano district.
Like other villages, a worrying number of drug addicts and Gutka-consumers are reported from my village. The figure runs into hundreds.
Keeping in view the enormous challenge of substance misuse in the rural areas and a swelling number of narcotic cases, it is imperative for the provincial government to establish Special Courts for Control of Narcotic Substances (CNS) across the province and appoint judges expeditiously to address this growing drug crisis quietly sweeping across the province’s cities, towns and villages.
