Water scarcity

Letter July 14, 2025
Water scarcity

Karachi — a city of over 20 million people — is facing a worsening water crisis with each passing day. Despite being the economic hub of Pakistan, Karachi experiences daily water scarcity, leaving citizens frustrated and helpless.

Many areas, including North Karachi, Gulistan-e-Johar and Korangi, go without water for days. Residents are forced to rely on expensive water tankers, often run by a powerful and unregulated ‘tanker mafia.’ This not only places a financial burden on already struggling families but also raises serious concerns about inequality and governance.

It is disheartening that in 2025, a megacity like Karachi is still deprived of such a basic human necessity. The authorities must take urgent and concrete steps to upgrade the city’s water supply infrastructure, regulate tanker operations and ensure equitable distribution of water.
