Stray animals, such as cats and dogs, endure harsh and miserable conditions while living in our surroundings, yet their suffering is often overlooked. Globally, there are an estimated 600 million stray animals. These vulnerable creatures roam the streets without shelter to protect them from extreme heat or biting cold. They struggle daily for survival, often without adequate food or water.
Tragically, many of them face cruel treatment from people who throw stones at them or beat them mercilessly. Countless stray animals fall sick and even die in painful conditions without anyone noticing. Road accidents also claim the lives of millions of animals. It is estimated that around 2 billion animals die on roads each year. In Pakistan alone, animal rescue groups such as the Ayesha Chundrigar Foundation receive 30 to 40 injured animals daily — most of them hit by vehicles or hurt by people.
This is a heartbreaking reality. As responsible citizens, we cannot turn a blind eye to their pain. It is time for kind-hearted individuals, government authorities, and international organisations to come forward, acknowledge their suffering, and take serious action to protect these voiceless beings.
