Environmental shift

We can no longer ignore climate change, because it is already creating problems for the global supply of food and water. Because of unpredictable rainfall, long periods of dry weather, and changing weather, agriculture is now suffering greatly in vulnerable places.

Farmers across the globe are experiencing losses because of high temperatures and unpredictable weather for farming. In many parts of the world, usual crops like wheat, rice, and maize are not producing as well; at the same time, pests and diseases are increasing because of the warming climate.

Livestock is in danger too, because the stress of high temperatures and a loss of grasslands threaten them. As a result of these disruptions, people are experiencing high food prices, difficulties finding food, and more hunger, mainly in vulnerable areas that struggle to get enough food. Furthermore, groundwater is being used up quicker than it is being recharged, and rivers are running out of water. It impairs both the drinking water and the water for irrigation in agriculture.

Change in the world’s climate is resulting in less food and less drinking water, which in turn leads to more instability. Acting quickly is very important. Authorities should support farming that can handle climate change, guard the supply of clean water, and work to reduce pollution due to greenhouse gases. Inaction could mean that people may not be able to earn the basic needs of food and water anymore.
