Robberies before Eid

Robberies before Eid

In the days leading up to and during Eid-ul-Azha, street crime and enduring insecurity have tragically increased in Karachi. Despite Eid-ul-Azha being an occasion marked by sacrifice, charity, and a communal spirit, in recent years it has transformed into a time of heightened fear and anxiety for the residents of this city. The rise in mobile phone snatching, cash thefts, and cattle-related robberies has rendered even the simplest errands unsafe.

Individuals visiting markets to buy sacrificial animals or to withdraw cash from ATMs are often targeted, frequently in broad daylight. Despite repeated assurances, the visibility of law enforcement on the streets seems insufficient. Numerous areas, particularly in the evening hours, show a lack of any discernible police presence.

Criminals operate with impunity, aware that the likelihood of apprehension is minimal. Due to this brazenness, citizens are left feeling vulnerable and defenseless during what should be a period of spiritual contemplation and communal celebration.

The city administration and police authorities should implement immediate and tangible measures to restore public trust. An increase in police presence, the installation of CCTV cameras in high-risk areas, and prompt action against offenders are crucial. The people of Karachi deserve to observe Eid-ul-Azha in an atmosphere of peace and security, rather than one of fear.
