KARACHI:
Civic awareness is a critical foundation for any responsible society, yet it remains largely absent from our mainstream educational curriculum. In Pakistan, many students graduate without basic knowledge of how governance works, what their rights are, or how they can participate meaningfully in democratic processes.
The absence of civic education in schools has led to an entire generation disconnected from the importance of voting, constitutional rights, social responsibility, and rule of law. Many young citizens are unaware of how their daily actions, from paying taxes to obeying traffic rules, impact the larger system. This gap also contributes to the spread of misinformation and political apathy.
Introducing civic education at school level can empower students to grow into informed, active citizens. Schools must go beyond rote academics to help students understand the real-world importance of laws, governance, and community engagement.
Policymakers and the Ministry of Education must integrate civic education as a formal part of the curriculum nationwide. A democratic future depends on citizens who are not just literate, but civically conscious.
