KARACHI:
Cockfighting is considered a traditional activity across South Asia, Latin America and Southeast Asia. Since it is protected by the label of ‘tradition’, this inhumane and bloodthirsty practice remains permitted. Despite betting in these events being banned, people do it illegally in many areas of Pakistan, especially during festivals.
Cockfighting is fairly prevalent in Hub. People gamble, drink wine and bet on these voiceless animals, with fights often breaking out among people themselves. Even children, instead of investing their time in education, visit these events almost daily. The police come to put an end to such events but quietly go away once they are offered bribes.
It is imperative to make cockfighting illegal in Pakistan. The relevant authorities must take strict actions to put an end to this culture and instead encourage society to be kinder towards animals.
