Taxpayer woes

Taxpayer woes

It is unbelievable and distressing that in a city as large and important as Karachi, taxpayers are being tortured, humiliated and mistreated at most of the Sub-Registrar Offices, despite fulfilling all legal requirements and paying their due taxes to the government and FBR.

In any civilised and noble society, taxpayers are welcomed, respected and facilitated for they are the backbone of the nation’s economy. But unfortunately, in our system, the very individuals who contribute honestly to the national treasury are treated as if they are seeking undue favour. The environment at the Sub-Registrar Office is marred by harassment, unnecessary delays, rude behaviour, and in some cases, even mental torture.

Senior citizens, educated individuals and even women are made to stand in long queues for hours, only to be sent away due to excuses or unofficial demands. On the other hand, agents and middlemen who operate with impunity receive preferential treatment. This reflects not only institutional failure but also a dangerous disrespect for the law and public trust.

It is high time that the Government of Sindh, Anti-Corruption Department, and relevant judicial authorities took immediate action. Strict measures must be taken against officials who misuse their authority and degrade the dignity of law-abiding citizens.

We demand a system where taxpayers are treated with the respect and dignity they rightfully deserve, and where public offices become symbols of service, not suffering.
