Red bus service

Red bus service

The recent changes in public transportation fares, particularly for the Red Bus service, has left the common man in great distress and is a point of deep concern and frustration for many. Initially, when the government launched the Red Buses, it was a relief for the public. With a low fare of just Rs50 for any distance, air conditioning and ample standing space, these buses quickly became the preferred mode of transport for many. Even if people had to stand, they chose the Red Bus over local transports like qingqis or traditional buses because of the comfort and affordability it offered.

In February 2025, the government drastically increased Red Bus fares to Rs80 for a 15-kilometre ride and Rs120 for longer distances, making the service unaffordable for many and forcing commuters back to qingqis and local buses. However, just as people were readjusting, the government discontinued qingqis — one of the most affordable transport options — leaving the public with no choice but to rely on the costly and inconsistent Red Bus service, with fares varying and little regard for the average citizen’s struggle. This entire situation has created chaos and immense inconvenience. Transportation is a necessity, not a luxury, and the government must be held accountable. Are these decisions made to ease public life, or to burden it further?

The authorities should reconsider the fare structure, bring back affordable local transport options and take responsibility for the hardships being faced by thousands daily.
