In today’s digital age, where information is just a click away, the habit of reading books is gradually fading. People are increasingly obsessed with screens and rely on social media to obtain information which ultimately shapes their values and opinions. While social media has its benefits, it is crucial for the public to understand that their knowledge of events should not rely on an algorithmically curated feed.
Also, books help provide deeper knowledge while also enhancing your mental development and critical thinking skills. Just as physical exercise is essential for a healthy body, mental stimulation is vital for a healthier mind.
Unfortunately, rising book prices have led to the decline of print culture as many people find it difficult to afford books. There is an evident lack of public libraries, further enabling a disconnect from reading culture. Establishing libraries in every neighbourhood is key to fostering a strong culture of reading among people.
Along with that, the government, educators, and parents should all collaborate through policy measures and awareness to promote reading in homes, schools, and public spaces. The government can set up ‘book streets’, offer incentives to local bookstores, and help build libraries in rural areas.
These initiatives will make reading more accessible and will eventually transform the way that the public engages with intellectualism.
