Motorways and our economic future

As we navigate the complexities of modern life, it is imperative to acknowledge that citizens are entitled to basic necessities, including food, clothing and shelter. However, another vital aspect that deserves attention is the need for well-developed roads and motorways. These routes are the lifeblood of our transportation system, connecting people to their desired destinations, fostering economic growth and ensuring public safety.
Unfortunately, Pakistan has been plagued by a surge in road accidents, resulting in the loss of precious lives. This is often attributed to reckless driving and inadequate infrastructure, which has become a ticking time bomb on our roads. While Pakistan has made significant strides in building motorways, reminiscent of those in advanced countries, certain regions like Sindh province still await the completion of these projects, leaving commuters in a state of limbo.
Recently, the announcement of a new motorway connecting Lahore, Sahiwal and Bahawalnagar, funded by the federal government, has brought a ray of hope to people. However, it is imperative to address the elephant in the room — the unfinished motorway projects, such as the 306km long Sukkur-Hyderabad motorway, which has been pending since August 2017. The government’s promise to complete this project by December 2019 remains unfulfilled, leaving commuters to face difficulties in their daily journeys. It is high time for the government to put its money where its mouth is and deliver on its promises.
The new motorway project is a welcome development, but it is crucial to prioritise the completion of existing projects. The government must expedite the construction of the Sukkur-Hyderabad motorway to provide relief to the people of Sindh, who have been taken for a ride for far too long. Moreover, the development of new motorways will not only facilitate travel but also contribute to the country’s economic growth, creating a ripple effect that will benefit the nation as a whole.
The government needs to focus on completing the ongoing motorway projects, particularly in Sindh province, while continuing to develop new routes. This will ensure that citizens have access to safe and efficient transportation, ultimately contributing to the country’s progress and prosperity. It is time for the government to shift into high gear and deliver on its promises, rather than leaving citizens in a state of uncertainty.
