The increasing number of beggars in our society has become a pressing cause for concern. Begging has become a profession for many, with organised networks and dedicated locations. Even more alarming is the induction of little children within this network who are being forced to beg. Instead of going to school and playing, these children are being exploited for the sake of generating income. Not only does this ruin their future, but it inadvertently damages the future of our own country. Growing up without education and proper care will devoid these children of a stable future and they will eventually struggle to become responsible citizens.
Moreover, the influx of beggars also affects Pakistan’s image and tourism in this country. Tourists who are not used to strangers approaching them on the street often feel uncomfortable when approached by beggars, sometimes aggressively. This highlights mismanagement and neglect on the very streets and poses concern for individual safety.
A major reason for the rise in beggary is a lack of awareness regarding distinguishing those who are genuinely in need and those who are part of an organized network. These professional beggars also manipulate public sympathy and divert resources away from the people in need. If people continue to fund this societal problem, it will continue to persist.
Government intervention is crucial to address this crisis. Strict laws should be enforced against people who exploit children for begging. Moreover, the government must provide education, shelter, and employment opportunities to curtail the problem of begging. By tackling this issue through legislative action, social welfare programmes, and public awareness, the country can move towards becoming a dignified society.
