Absence of career counselling

Absence of career counselling

KARACHI:

The lack of proper career counseling for students constitutes a major gap existing in Pakistan’s educational system. While school and colleges emphasise academic excellence, they fail to provide students with the guidance needed to make informed career choices. As a result many students excel in exams but struggle to find direction in their professional lives.

An example in the context are the recent changes in the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) policies, which have left thousands of aspiring medical students uncertain about future. The fluctuating admission criteria, shifting MDCAT policies and increasing competition have made the situation even more critical for students. Many students spend years preparing for medical entrance exams only to realise too late that they either do not meet the updated criteria or lack the passion for the field. If provided with proper career guidance early on then, such students can explore alternative professions that align better with their skills and interest.

It is crucial for educational institutions to implement proper career counseling programmes allowing students to explore their strength and interest before selecting in any field. If we want our students to truly succeed not just in exams but in life as well without any societal pressure then we must address this gap in our education system. Career counseling should be a priority not an afterthought.
