Despite a nationwide PTA ban on TikTok, the application continues to maintain its wide user base across Pakistan whilst simultaneously shaping the social media landscape. Therefore, it is essential to examine its far-reaching impact on our society — particularly on the younger generation.
On one hand, TikTok has provided a creative outlet for users of all classes to express themselves, showcase their talents and connect with other people. It has also been used for education, activism and entertainment. However, concerns about its influence on mental health, social relationships and productivity cannot be ignored.
The app is a rampant source of misinformation for young users, significantly impacting their political and social perspectives. Excessive use can also result in social isolation, decreased attention span and decreased productivity. Furthermore, the risks of cyberbullying, online harassment and exposure to inappropriate content are real and alarming.
It’s crucial that users, particularly young ones, maintain a healthy balance between their online and offline lives. To mitigate the risks mentioned above, it is important that parents, educators and influencers promote responsible social media usage and digital literacy.
