The proliferation of counterfeit medicines has become a growing cause for concern in the Turbat town of Balochistan. The manufacturers are disregarding health risks to people for the sake of their own profit. Unfortunately, the government is yet to acknowledge or take action against this persistent medical fraud, further emboldening the criminals.
Widespread sale of counterfeit medicines is not just the sole fault of fraudulent manufacturers; it is a result of an even more sinister understory. Manufacturers have collaborated with doctors who are instructed to knowingly prescribe these medicines in exchange for a share in the profits. This leaves the people of Turbat unable to rely on local hospitals, with no safe and affordable avenue to turn to. The community is already economically disadvantaged and patients who cannot afford to travel to other cities for treatment suffer from adverse reactions, and in some cases, even succumb to death.
The Government of Balochistan and the Provincial Health Department need to take strict action against these profit-hungry criminals who are gravely harming public health. Additionally, the government should launch an investigation against healthcare professionals who are involved in this activity and revoke their licence to practise. The supply chain should also be strictly monitored in order to prevent counterfeit medicines from reaching hospitals and pharmacies.
