Digital scams

In today’s digital age, fraudulent activities have grown increasingly sophisticated, with scammers exploiting trust and targeting unsuspecting individuals. A particularly alarming trend is the rise of fraudulent websites impersonating government agencies like FBR, NADRA and DGI&P. These scams deceive citizens into paying for fake services such as CNIC, passports or tax registrations, posing significant financial risks and undermining the credibility of legitimate institutions.
To avoid falling victim, it’s essential to recognise red flags. Fraudulent websites often use suspicious domains, such as “.com” instead of the official “.gov.pk”. Unsolicited emails urging immediate action or promising expedited services are also common tactics. Additionally, scammers may charge high service fees, request excessive personal information or use fear-based messaging to pressure victims into making hasty payments without verifying authenticity.
Protecting yourself requires proactive measures. Always access official government websites by manually typing the URL into your browser and avoiding links from emails or ads. Cross-verify any payment requests, as government agencies will never ask for payments or personal information via calls, emails or texts. Regularly review bank statements for unauthorised transactions to catch any suspicious activity early.
Adopting strong cybersecurity practices is another critical step. Use unique and strong passwords for all your accounts and enable two-factor authentication (2FA) to add an extra layer of security. Stay vigilant against suspicious messages or requests, and avoid sharing unnecessary personal information online.
Always use secure internet connections when accessing sensitive information or making online transactions. Monitor your digital footprint by limiting the amount of personal information shared on social media and other platforms. If you encounter a suspicious website or receive a fraudulent message, report it to the relevant authorities to help prevent others from becoming victims.
Stay informed, vigilant and proactive so as to avoid online fraud.
