KARACHI:
The duty of law enforcement officers is to ensure rule of law, but many examples indicate the opposite. It is upsetting to observe the police’s lethargy and lack of professionalism. They frequently treat citizens disrespectfully rather than providing protection. The police have no professional skills and lack training to investigate cases. Corruption, especially in the form of bribery, thrives within the police. Due to inefficiency and negligence, many cases remain unsolved or unreported. There are numerous other similar examples, where law enforcement has failed to regulate protesters and keep the peace.
A recent incident in Multan highlighted this problem. A mobile camera recording that has gone viral on social media shows a Superintendent of Police abusing an elderly motorcyclist for violating protocol. Such behaviour is unacceptable from those responsible for public safety. Instead of resorting to discipline with professionalism, some officers resort to threats and insults.
When we observe the police in other developed countries, we see a clear difference. They follow strict professional standards, speak softly with people, and handle situations with discipline and justice. It strengthens the trust between the police and the public. This makes the implementation of the law more effective.
A professional and courteous police force not only improves public perception, but overall security also. It is very important for the authorities to take immediate steps to improve the conduct of the police and develop a culture of professionalism and accountability.
