KARACHI:
Tragic accidents involving dumper trucks have resulted in the deaths of five motorcyclists in Karachi just the last week, demonstrating a serious challenge that requires immediate response. Traffic police reports show that heavy vehicles — including water and oil tankers, trailers and dumper trucks — have killed so many road users in the metropolis in recent times. The reported casualty statistics prove the existence of fundamental flaws in managing hazardous vehicle movements on city roads. Such law enforcement inadequacies are a direct threat to the lives of people, causing serious concerns among motorcyclists, in particular. It’s about time for the authorities to strictly enforce the time limit for movement of heavy vehicles in the city, besides subjecting violators with harsher punishments, like a very heavy fine. Safety of motorists and passersby must be paramount.
