Pakistan’s foreign policy efforts in strengthening ties with Bangladesh are remarkable. The recent positive trajectory in bilateral relations between the two countries is a testament to Pakistan’s diplomatic prowess and its commitment to promoting regional cooperation.
Since the end of Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, Pakistan and Bangladesh have made significant strides in improving relations, much to the dismay of India. India’s concerns are palpable, as Pakistan-Bangladesh relations have become a challenge to India’s regional dominance plans. For far too long, India has attempted to exert its influence over Bangladesh, using its geographical proximity and economic leverage to dictate Dhaka’s foreign policy.
However, with the change in government, Pakistan has seized the opportunity to revitalise ties with Bangladesh. The recent visit of Bangladesh’s Second-in-Command of the Army, Lt Gen Qamarul Hasan, to Pakistan and the successful meetings with civil and military leaders are a significant step forward. This visit marked a significant departure from the past, when Bangladesh’s military leadership was hesitant to engage with Pakistan.
Moreover, the signing of several MoUs during the visit of the President of the Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry to Dhaka demonstrates the commitment of both countries to revive trade ties. Pakistan and Bangladesh have a long history of cultural and economic exchange, and it is essential that they work together to promote mutual understanding and cooperation.
Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts have been consistent, with Ambassador Syed Ahmed Maroof holding several meetings with new administration officials in Bangladesh. These meetings have helped to build trust and confidence between the two nations, paving the way for increased cooperation in areas such as trade, defence and education.
The upcoming visit of Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar to Bangladesh in February 2025 is expected to further strengthen ties between the two countries. This visit will provide an opportunity for both nations to discuss areas of mutual interest and to explore new avenues for cooperation.
This is a development step towards a more stable and prosperous South Asia. By strengthening ties with Bangladesh, Pakistan is sending a clear message that it is committed to promoting peace and stability in the region. It is expected that both Pakistan and Bangladesh will continue working together to promote mutual understanding and cooperation. By doing so, they can help create a more stable and prosperous South Asia, where all nations can live in peace and harmony.
