KARACHI:
For centuries, humans have been using fossil fuels. Nature has finite sources of non-renewable resources to overcome mankind’s energy demand in future. The primary sources are oil, coal and natural gas, gradually running out of the earth. However, the argument is not just about the resources but also about the environmental impacts. Fossil fuels and non-recyclable products are harmful to the environment, as the world has already been facing issues related to global warming, ozone depletion, flooding, melting of glaciers, smog, heatwaves, water contamination, etc. So, a sustainable shift to renewable sources is not only a need but also a matter of survival on Earth.
The world needs to move to a sustainable and nature-friendly source to mitigate energy demand in future. We should promote sources of renewable energy comprising the best natural ways, most importantly, solar energy, wind energy and biomass energy. For years, Pakistan has been going through severe challenges related to the energy crisis and devastating climate changes. Now, it’s time to generate energy from an eco-friendly and sustainable source and spread awareness among common people. The initial steps to take in Pakistan: firstly, Pakistan the policemakers should formulate stable, long-term and short-term policies at the governmental level; secondly, they should modernise the infrastructure by installing wind turbines in coastal areas, deploying solar panels on roofs of every government and non-government building; and lastly, they should make sure that all buildings and houses being constructed in the country are sustainable, equipped with renewable sources for energy, less use of plastics, higher use of recyclable products and optimal water-management system.
Renewable energy will be the need of the world in the coming years, Pakistan as well as other climate-affected countries should implement policies to commercialise renewable sources.
