Deaths and disaster in coalmines across Pakistan are a common occurrence. Earlier this month, a coalmine explosion in Sanjdi area of Balochistan caused the death of 12 workers, 10 of whom were from Shangla district of K-P. One of the most horrific coalmine incidents came in 2011 when 42 workers, all hailing from Shangla’s Peerabad area, had lost their lives to a coalmine explosion. These accidents have resulted in widows, orphans and disabled people in Shangla. The government must take urgent steps to ensure safety of coalmine workers, and avoid any more loss of lives.
