Education: revisiting policies

KARACHI:

The disparity in Pakistan’s educational system persists and continues to widen day by day. It’s a well-known fact now that more than 26 million children in Pakistan are out of school. The alarming number — the second highest in the world — is increasing annually. This exacerbates social problems and hinders the country’s progress and development. The widening gap in education has led to increased social and class inequality, gender discrimination, social crimes and intolerance in society.

The government, policymakers and educationalists must revisit the policies in the education sector. The increasing number of students out of school is alarming, and it is also violating their basic right to education. To address this crisis, inclusive policies must be implemented, with a focus on prioritising quality education that aligns with modern-day needs. Education is critical in bringing tolerance and inclusiveness to society and maximising gender and social equality. To ensure social transformation and national growth, effective actions need to be taken urgently.
