Maintenance of graveyard

Letter January 21, 2025
Maintenance of graveyard

KARACHI:

The state of graveyard maintenance in Pakistan is a pressing concern, fraught with social, cultural and environmental implications. The country’s graveyards are often overcrowded, poorly maintained and plagued by corruption, nepotism and lack of transparency. This neglect not only disrespects the deceased and their loved ones but also poses significant health and environmental risks to surrounding communities.

A comprehensive approach is necessary to address these challenges. Establishing a national cemetery management authority could provide a solution, enabling standardised regulations, transparent management practices and adequate maintenance of graveyards. This authority could oversee burial plot allocation, prevent land encroachment and ensure the overall upkeep of cemeteries, thereby restoring dignity to these sacred spaces and promoting a culture of respect for the deceased.
