As the world welcomes the news of the Gaza ceasefire-hostage deal, I am compelled to express my heartfelt desire for lasting peace in the region. The agreement, brokered by Egyptian and Qatari mediators with the backing of the US, marks a crucial step towards ending the 15-month war that has ravaged the Middle East.
The deal, which involves the exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners, is a beacon of hope for the people of Gaza who have endured unimaginable suffering. The release of 33 Israeli hostages and hundreds of Palestinian prisoners is a significant confidence-building measure that can pave the way for a more permanent peace.
However, as we celebrate this milestone, we must not lose sight of the long and arduous journey ahead. The road to lasting peace requires sustained commitment, compromise and cooperation from all parties involved.
It is expected of the international community to continue supporting the peace process, ensure that the agreement is implemented in letter and spirit and address the underlying issues that have fueled this conflict. This includes promoting economic development, improving living conditions and fostering dialogue and understanding between Israelis and Palestinians.
Furthermore, it is essential to recognise the critical role that civil society organisations, humanitarian groups and human rights advocates have played in highlighting the plight of the Palestinian people and pushing for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
There should be a world where the people of Gaza and the entire Middle East can live in peace, dignity and prosperity. Forever peace is not just a distant dream; it is a collective responsibility that world must strive to achieve.
