The educational significance of Karachi has unfortunately diminished to the point where it can now be referred to as an “educational marketplace”. This is not to offend anyone, but the reality is that coaching centres, private schools, private colleges and even private universities have sprung up in every street and neighbourhood. Education, it seems, has become a commodity — one can purchase as much as they desire here.
There was a time when people from various cities across Pakistan came to Karachi in pursuit of quality education. Studying at the University of Karachi was considered a matter of pride. Sadly, that era has passed. Today, the values, systems, awareness and enlightenment associated with education in Karachi appear to have vanished.
This letter is inspired by the heartfelt observations of one of our students at the University of Karachi, whose reflections highlight both the challenges and aspirations of our academic community. As the student expressed, their concerns go beyond the typical grievances of inadequate facilities, high fees or unmotivated teachers. Instead, they point to the deeper issue of outdated curricula and the need for educational reform.
Despite several challenges, the student’s love and respect for their alma mater shine through. As a proud member of the University of Karachi, they voiced their hope to see teachers who genuinely invest in their students, provide quality education and strive to uplift the declining standards of learning. The student astutely noted that while a small number of dedicated educators continue to uphold the principles of their profession, the majority, unfortunately, fall short of fulfilling their responsibilities. Teachers hold the profound ability to shape students into exceptional individuals, akin to crafting raw gems into radiant jewels. Today’s students, teeming with talent, creativity and untapped potential, are simply awaiting the right guidance and mentorship to truly flourish.
As a faculty member, I feel compelled to highlight the student’s thoughtful appeal for progress, urging all stakeholders to unite in transforming our university into a centre of excellence once again, aiming at a brighter educational future for all.
