Social media has become an addiction, and that’s no revelation. We are constantly scrolling, comparing and craving those elusive likes and comments. But beneath the surface, something more sinister is brewing. Pakistan’s youth are bearing the brunt of this addiction. A recent survey by the Digital Rights Foundation revealed some startling statistics: 70% of young Pakistanis spend over 4 hours a day on social media; 60% feel anxious or depressed because of social media; and 55% compare their lives to others online
These numbers are a wake-up call. Social media is warping our perceptions, eroding our self-esteem, and destroying our relationships. But that’s not all. Excessive social media use is also harming our physical and mental health. Staring at screens for hours on end is damaging our eyesight, disrupting our sleep patterns, and exacerbating symptoms of anxiety and depression.
It’s time to take control of our lives and break free from the cycle of addiction. We need to learn to use social media responsibly, limiting our screen time to a healthy amount each day. Let’s focus on what truly matters: our relationships, our health and our happiness.
