Just outside my home, in Karachi, a manhole lies exposed, inviting accidents and tragedies. The risks are real and devastating. Children play nearby, oblivious of the danger, while stray and pet animals roam freely, vulnerable to falling into these uncovered pits. The heartbreaking loss of a stray kitten, which fell into one such manhole, remains engraved in my memory. The lack of concern for its life was disheartening, highlighting the apathy towards addressing this critical issue.
The one outside my home is not the only uncovered manhole in Karachi. Alarmingly, my hometown is dotted with such open manholes, posing a significant threat not only to the health of the citizens but their very existence also. The relevant authorities must realise the gravity of the situation by: ensuring that there are no uncovered gutters; carrying out regular maintenance and inspection; and collaborating with local communities to monitor progress. Inaction may only lead to avoidable tragedies.
